Jesica Jayd H. Lewis

Jesica Jayd Lewis is a recent graduate of North Carolina State University’s MA program in Ancient History with a BA in Spanish Language and Literature, Middle East Studies, and Anthropology.

Jesica currently works as an independent researcher, continuing her master’s thesis research on pre-Roman and Roman period society in the island of Crete. She also serves as managing editor of Mashriq & Mahjar: Journal of Middle East Migration Studies, a publication of the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies at North Carolina State University. Jesica also provides private lessons in Spanish, Latin, and Ancient Greek to students of all levels.

Jesica’s passion for learning and sharing knowledge has led to her involvement in a number of projects as part of the Digital Humanities movement. She is a Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC) fellow and served as a communications fellow for the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) between 2014 and 2015. She is also the creator and chief editor of AntiquorumHistory.com (a collaborative blog about history and archaeology), and she is also the creator and producer of ArchaeoCast (a podcast devoted to bringing history and archaeology to the public, forthcoming 2016).

As a final project for her studies in language and culture in Spanish-speaking areas of the world, Jesica Jayd was a participant in the Ethnographic Field School in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala during the summer of 2011, under NCSU Professor of Anthropology, Dr. Tim Wallace. During this program, she conducted ethnographic research among two different Mayan language groups living around Lake Atitlan, comparing their experiences of language and culture change in the face of increased contact among each other and with the international community.

Spanish lessons with Jesica Jayd Lewis are designed to meet the particular needs of individual students. Students may choose to enroll in Tutoring (for students currently enrolled in a Spanish course), Private Lessons (personalized lessons without graded assignments), or a Full Spanish Course (formal lessons with graded assignments).

Tutoring ($35 per hour) is available to students of all levels and education formats (including college, high school, middle school, elementary students). Meetings are scheduled according to students’ needs and availability. These may be once weekly, bi-weekly, or more frequent meetings. Tutoring is available in person and online (via Skype of Google Hangout). For in person tutoring, clients may travel to the instructor or the instructor may travel to the student, or both the student and instructor may meet in a third-party location. Additional fees apply for instructor travel (Hourly Rate x Travel Time to and from appointed location).

Full Courses are designed to fulfill the foreign language requirements for homeschool students in North Carolina and prepare students to take the National Spanish Exam of their level either at the conclusion of their course between March 1 and April 17 in 2015 or in between March and April of 2016 (Exams for Year 1 are typically taken during the middle portion of Year 2, Year 2 Exams taken mid-Year 3, and so on). Registration for the National Spanish Exam is not required for the Full Course, however Jayd Lewis strongly encourages students to take the exam in order to receive a standardized certification of their proficiency and achievement in Spanish as well as to qualify for scholarships through the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Private Lessons are available both in person and online (via Skype or Google Hangout). For in person tutoring, clients may travel to the instructor or the instructor may travel to the student, or both may meet in a third-party location. Additional fees apply for instructor travel outside 10 miles from Morrisville, NC.
